Edelstein on the ‘Libertarian Smokescreen’

Over at The Projectionist, New York ‘s David Edelstein responds to the response to his post on Wednesday asking that movies featuring smoking be rated R : “To fight the charges of Puritanism, I guess I have to haul out my pervert-atheist credentials and support for legal marijuana. Let me repeat: I believe that nothing should be taboo in movies meant for people over the age of 17. Felching

Youth in Revolt’s Portia Doubleday Got a D in Theater 101

Portia Doubleday is the latest lady to fall for the cinematic charms of a dweeby, sensitive soul played by Michael Cera. She makes her leading-lady debut in Miguel Arteta’s Youth in Revolt as Sheeni, a beautiful, more-than-slightly-manipulative teen who lives in a trailer park but dreams of France and Jean-Paul Belmondo.

Ben Silverman’s New Venture Gets World’s Most Awesome Name

While things continue to implode over at 30 Rock, things could not be going more awesome for Vulture hero Ben Silverman. Earlier today he inked a deal with Yahoo to create video content for them. And now comes word that he formed a new production company with Jason Bateman and Will Arnett, a venture that will focus on developing commercials and shorts for advertisers.

The Anatomy of a Michael Cera Sex Scene, With Vulture Voice-over!

Michael Cera’s new movie, Youth in Revolt , comes out today, and features Cera playing (once again) a virginal, stammering hero who (once again) pines after a girl who might be The One. Vulture’s Lane Brown and Dan Kois look back at three notable Cera sex scenes from his past movies Superbad , Juno , and Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist to see how they succeed and how they fail — and how, by failing at love, Michael Cera succeeds in the movies. Note: The video can take a minute to load.

Great News: Rebirth Not Pushed Back

Okay, sorry, Rebirth isn’t getting pushed back until June . According to Billboard , it’s coming out February 2 after all, probably meaning there’s not enough time for Wayne to record any more crappy rock songs. And that’s it, last post on Rebirth ’s release date, we promise.

Vulture Premieres the Poster for the The Red Riding Trilogy

Arriving in theaters next month is The Red Riding Trilogy , a three-part, five-hour megamovie adapted from British author David Peace’s noir novels following the investigation into the Yorkshire Ripper killings in England in the seventies and eighties. The three parts are films unto themselves, each helmed by a different director: 1974 by Julian Jarrold ( Brideshead Revisited ), 1980 by James Marsh ( Man on Wire ), and 1983 by Anand Tucker ( Hilary and Jackie , this weekend’s Leap Year ). IFC has given Vulture first crack at the poster

Jake Gyllenhaal Survives Hostile Work Environment

“He walked up to me in the beginning of this movie, and he said [adopts Irish accent], ‘Jake, I just want you to know, you’re playing my little brother in the movie, so I’m going to have to hate you most of the time.’ Honestly, he was like, ‘I fucking hate you!’ But clearly the process worked.” — Jake Gyllenhaal on sibling rivalry with director Jim Sheridan on the set of Brothers [ Telegraph UK ] “I came up with it and Matt Groening said, ‘That’s funny, but is any of it going to be in 3-D on ice?’ I was like, ‘Maybe.’ Now, I can say it’s possible you’ll see something on ice, so watch for it. As for 3-D, that’s pretty expensive. Just ask Jim Cameron.” — Morgan Spurlock on The Simpsons 20th Anniversary Special in 3-D on Ice [ Parade ] “Could I have toilet paper

Lost Triumphs Over President

Despite earlier concerns , White House spokesman Robert Gibbs says he does not “foresee a scenario” in which Obama’s 2010 State of the Union address would conflict with February 2′s three-hour Lost premiere. Which means the speech will likely happen on January 26 and preempt American Idol (fine with us, since it’ll just be one of those crappy bad-audition episodes). Survival of the Fittest

By Martha Reed So there I was, sitting at my desk having survived the holidays reasonable intact (both mentally and physically), happy to be back in the groove and working away on finishing Chapter 25 and with my eye actually on finishing the whole damn book by March when I noticed that my fingers were stiff with cold. Granted, it was an exceptionally chilly day here in Western Pennsylvania at 17 degrees and with a negative wind chill factor and I do live in an 125 year old house than can get a bit drafty but when I checked the radiator next to my knee I found it was stone cold. In Pittsburgh, in January, that is never a good thing

Winter Memories

By Martha Reed In case you’re not from around these parts you may have missed yesterday’s big snowfall. We’ve had a mild December so far with one bad day of ice but there’s nothing like one bad day of zero degrees to remind you of just how warm forty degrees can feel. Yesterday, however, was one long day of falling snow and since I’ve done my Christmas shopping I settled in and decided to spend the day home (an extreme rarity any day) working on Chapter 24 and watching the kids tear up the snow in the ballfield next door.

Mysteries, mysteries, where forth are thou, mysteries.

By Pat Gulley Don’t know if you’ve noticed lately, but TV is a wasteland of no mysteries. So much so that when one comes on it’s like a starving person staring at a crust of bread, devouring it and then wondering where it went and barely remembering what it tasted like. Okay, PBS does its best, but BBC America and A&E have totally given up

Back to the Beginning

by Annette Dashofy Monday, over at my Writing, etc blog, I wrote about the next phase in the creation of my latest wip. Having finished the first draft a while ago, and having allowed it to simmer untouched for a few weeks, I’m now embarking on the second draft. Hubby’s been away at hunting camp since Sunday (someday I may blog about being a vegetarian, Bambi-loving yoga instructor happily married to a certified gun-toting hunter, but not today), leaving me home alone with my cat and my manuscript

How my simple iPhone app made it to the top of the App Store

Slightly more than a month back I wrote this little iPhone app ( App Store link ), almost a toy app really, to check the usage of my data plan with my local telco (Singtel). I wanted to scratch an itch and I also really didn’t want to exceed my data plan – the fees are excessive .

Refunds for Michael Jackson Concerts in London Lead to Accounting Nightmare

Following Michael Jackson’s sudden death last week, 750,000 fans are expecting refunds for their tickets to 50 concerts that were scheduled in London, but owing to extraordinarily complex legal issues, they may be waiting some time. AEG Live, the Los Angeles–based company that operates the O2 Arena where the concerts were to be performed, has claimed that an announcement regarding refunds will come later this week, but questions regarding the extent of their insurance coverage have led to strong doubts as to their ability to survive the payout. Though it seems certain that fans will eventually get their money, it looks increasingly doubtful that AEG or its insurers will come out of this worst case scenario entirely intact
