iRobot creates new business unit for healthcare robotics
Well, it doesn’t have a Roomba that will check up on your vitals just yet, but it looks like iRobot is betting on healthcare robotics in a fairly big way, with it taking advantage of the recent TEDMED conference to announce that it’s forming a new business unit focused solely on the still burgeoning industry. That unit will be headed up by Tod Loofbourrow, who says that he believes the business “has the potential to make a significant difference in the field of healthcare,” and adds that he thinks “the long-term potential of robotics to extend independent living is profound.” While he’s just as light on specifics, iRobot CEO Colin Angle is no less ambitious about the company’s goals, saying that iRobot’s “healthcare mission is add a million years of independent living to our customers.” And in case you’re wondering, the image at right isn’t an iRobot robot, but it is all too real . Down So Soon? Kindle Prices Take a Dive!
Those who bought the Amazon Kindle 2 when it was hot off the factory a few months ago may be shaking their heads at how the price of their nifty little gadget at home was slashed by $60. Even before its release, there has been a lot of speculation surrounding the significance of the e-book reader and how it will stand up to other gadgets that can do so much more. What is rather glaringly clear is how expensive the Kindle is, especially when you take in to account the fact that there is only so much you can do with it.

Tone-deaf robots teach each other to sing, passionately butcher a Happy Birthday rendition
After what must’ve been a few painful minutes of rehearsal, a few robots built by the Interdisciplinary Centre for Computer Music Research have preformed what we assume to be their first and last paid gig: a rendition of Happy Birthday to celebrate the 100th of the Science Museum in the UK. What’s interesting about these bots — outside of their horrible ear for music and laughable singing voices is the fact that they’ve actually been programmed to communicate and teach each other to sing through the process of singing to each other. Videos of both painful acts are after the break, and while we wouldn’t call it art, we shouldn’t throw stones: we’ve been in plenty of garage bands that sounded quite a bit worse.

Nerds Beat Netflix’s Recommendation System, Qualify for $1 Million Prize [Contests] In a very shrewd move, Netflix created a contest more than 3 years ago to award $1 million to anybody that could create an algorithm more than 10% more accurate than theirs.

Michael Jackson’s Legacy to the Tech World
The emergence of technology did not lead exclusively to innovation in industries and the corporate world. Technology, after all, is very much a part of ordinary life for most people, and has also become a source of entertainment. When purchasing computers and other peripherals to accompany it, such as printers, keyboards and mice, it is not uncommon to factor in entertainment-related considerations before making the decision to purchase a gadget

Book Presents Tips for New Sellers of Art Photography
By Eileen Fritsch Compared to the number of books that have been published on digital photography and Photoshop, relatively few books have been written on inkjet photo printing. Even fewer guides have been published about how to mat, mount, and frame inkjet prints for display in an exhibition or gallery. That’s why I was intrigued by a

Xerox Phaser 8550DP Solid ink printers are able to print on many different types and thicknesses of media. They are much less sensitive to changes in media type than are color laser printers . Compatible solid ink blocks are available and are considerably cheaper than official xerox supplies.Solid ink technology using heat and pressure, which is why solid ink produces such great image quality on any kind of media Solid ink printers are the same as the one used in inkjet and laser printers with black, cyan, magenta and yellow ink sticks used.A solid ink stick is based on environment friendly resin (similar to crayon), contains no solvents and produce no ozone.

Airport urinal surveillance cameras?
Last week, while traveling out of town from Hobby Airport, I took this photograph and posted it on Natuba/twitter: The sign on the urinal reads, “Automatic infrared flush sensors also provide video monitoring for security purposes” Posted on Natuba Gus over at Swamplot wrote it up as a story, after some back and forth on e-mail with me. And then Swamplot’s write-up got picked up on slashdot.org

Green Printing Myths – Busted! Why not make green by printing sustainably?
For the past few years, corporations have been touting the launch of each new sustainability program – from employee engagement initiatives to renewable energy powered operations. And so, 2009 is an interesting year for Green Printer to check in on the results of these shop floor and boardroom decisions. In a very interesting article, Anca Novacovici of Eco-Coach speaks about how corporations like 3M and Grossman Marketing group reaped in tangible – but unexpected revenue surges, savings and client kudos – by choosing the greener path.
