“Unbreakable” Displays

I’ve been following the whole e-paper thing for a few years now. Part of it is my interest as a journalist, of course. Most of the initial applications I’ve seen it in development for are for newspapers and magazines and the like, moving the printed page to a much more customized, digital solution that never needs to be thrown away, that gets constantly updated throughout the day with new items based on a predetermined set of variables—previous interests, search histories, etc.

The Chugulug Drinks Factory

Christmas is just around the corner and with it comes the barrage of parties, meals and get togethers and if you’re one of the people organising a Xmas bash at your home, maybe you might like to try out the Chugulug Drinks factory. The Chugulug drinks factory is essentially a series of pipes and pods which can be attached to the side of a fridge or a tiled wall, and you can fit the component parts together in any fashion you see fit to make the perfect cocktail mix, all you need do then is find two suitable beverages and pour them into the top of the gizmo, and watch as they pour down their separate tubes and get mixed in various fun ways on their way to your glass at the bottom. The Chugulug features two vortex funnels (where you pour in your two mixers) The Mill (which mixes your drink), The Propeller (which aerates and churns your drink) The Tank and The Tap which stores your drink until you are ready to pour, you can even add ice at the Tap section meaning your drink is perfect and icy cold

Humax Foxsat HDR

Pretty much everyone in the UK who hasn’t been living in a box for the last five years has heard of, or more importantly since the old analogue signal will start to be phased out soon upgraded to Freeview, the digital broadcast system, but late last year a new digital standard emerged called Freesat, which was much the same as Freeview but required a satellite dish to receive all the channels, the best part about the new service was that if you had the cash you could by a HD version of the box and pick up any High Definition channels being broadcast, but at launch few big name manufacturers were on board, and services were sketchy at best with many devices being delayed due to specification issues. Things have improved greatly since launch, and although support from the big name electronics companies is still rather thin on the ground at least Panasonic has launched a range of TV’s with built in Freesat HD, now a new set top box from Humax called the Foxsat HDR has launched and as the name suggests it is a recorded allowing you for the first time for free (non Sky subscription) to record High Definition broadcasts for your viewing pleasure such as BBC HD and ITV, the Foxsat comes with a built in 320GB hard drive which will allow around 80 hours of HD programming or 200 hours of normal def programs, 8 day EPG (program guide) for recording ease, series recording, live pause, digital text and the option to record the channel in standard or HD if both services are offered.

Latex ink, a breakthrough against VOCs and solvent odor

Latex ink, a breakthrough against VOCs and solvent odor HP latex ink samples are all over my desk. Latex ink documentation is atop them. It’s late at night and lots of news of HP’s new latex ink that will replace solvent, and frankly may replace eco-solvent, mild-solvent, and lite-solvent inks too.

Here Comes the Judge

I had the opportunity to head out to Phoenix at the end of last week to take part once again as a judge in the MACtac Awards program, judging the North American entries. Apart from loving the warmth of Arizona when it was about 10 degrees back home in New York, it’s always a pleasure to do something fun like this. There were more entries this year than there were two years ago and I have to say that there were some really great entries into the contest.

The Power of Print

HP’s been talking about Print 2.0 for the past several months, but what is it, really? According to Vyomesh Joshi, executive vice president of the company’s Imaging and Printing Group during Hewlett-Packard’s Print 2.0 press summit back in May and again in August, it a future vision and it’s designed to look at the future of printing and it’s movement—from the desktop to the web—which is creating a world of “mash” media

On Your Mark! Get Set! Go!

In mid-January, I had the chance to visit Oce North America in Chicago for its Productivity Challenge—an Oce-sponsored press event where I had the opportunity to test some competitive monochrome and color CAD systems hands on. It was certainly a unique event that brought up some interesting questions and ideas about the true measure of productivity and speed and what it really means to have a workable, usable piece of equipment. I made some mention of this in my February editorial, but didn’t have the space to go into any details about what I did.
