Now, For Many (But Not All) Plasmas, The Bigger They Are, The Harder They Fall
In a television retail universe characterized by soft demand and softer prices, big screen plasmas seemed almost uniquely immune to sharp discounting; that is, until now. As noted in our press release this week, the PriceSCAN Plasma Television 60 Inch+ Index has now given back all its gains from an 11% price spike back in the first half of August

From Seedy Hide-Away to Literary Fun House
This week, the bold, brave and very funny Tom Gammarino ( Big in Japan ) ventures into the remnants of the New York underworld for his first of three readings in the Big Apple. As we planned his trip, we thought to ourselves, “What better place to kick off this particular book tour than in a former massage parlor?” For those of you who’ve already read Big in Japan , you may be smirking with understanding. But for those of you who have yet to pick up your copy, you can catch Tom on his cross-country tour and hear for yourselves why we sought out the seedy

Big Wing – The Airbus of The Early 30s
Hi all, Here is my latest airplane model project – a Junkers G.38 giant wing airliner of the Lufthansa fleet. I find the German “Nurflügel” or ‘flying wing’ designs interesting and this is related, although it has a tailplane that looks like a bomber from WWI. The Junkers G.38 was the largest land-based airplane of it´s day (the Dornier Do-X was a boat plane).

At Last, A Twelve Megapixel Snapshot Of A Price Cut
While many high-tech goods this year have seen more than precipitous price drops, one stalwart of price stability has been twelve megapixel digital cameras – that is, until now. I noted back in June that prices of these higher resolution digital cameras were showing remarkable strength (see “ State Of The Art Digital Camera Prices Show Staying Power ”). And indeed, that stability persisted: from October 2008 to October 2009 we saw only a 2% decline in our PriceSCAN 12 Megapixel Digital Camera Index .

Just a few days ago, we lamented the meager numbers of literature and poetry that make their way from Japanese to English (see this post ). Well, the Quarterly Conversation just published a piece, condensing the recommendations of more than 40 translators, publishers and agents about what they felt needs to be translated into English. These were the recommendations concerning Japanese literature (click on each recommender’s name for the rationale): 1

Is “America’s Most Literate City Getting Less Literate Every Day”?
The travails of the nation’s “most literate city”, Seattle, have garnered headlines nationwide – most recently in the Los Angeles Times . [Side note: Watch for the release of the 2009 Most Literate City survey results in the next few weeks. The two perennial champions, Seattle and Minneapolis, have both lost daily papers and independent bookstores this year, factors which have contributed to their high rankings.] Focusing on the news that the city’s flagship bookstore, Elliott Bay Book Co

My Motorola Droid quick-review
I tried out the Motorola Droid for 2 weeks, including a business trip to Los Angeles last week and here are my quick notes: Google Navigation is nice! I like the user interface — for example, it’s nice how the next step in your driving directions are rendered in white text on a dark green background (just like the road signs on U.S.
