Genome Sequencing Becomes a Family Affair

A former sequencing executive and his family have their genomes sequenced. A family of four has become the first to have their genomes sequenced for non-medical reasons. According to The Times , John and Judy West, both 53, and their children, Anne, 17, and Paul, 14, paid almost $200,000 to have their entire genetic code read by the sequencing company Illumina .

Direct-to-Consumer Genetic Research

23andMe’s consumer-based approach to research seems to be working. The California start-up 23andMe sells genome scans directly to consumers, offering analysis of disease risk, ancestry and other genetic factors via its website. People who buy the scan can also opt to do a number of different surveys, on everything from specific disease symptoms to whether or not one sneezes in response to sunlight.

New Tricks for Genome Sequencing

Sequencing is being used to track how the immune system changes over time, to measure gene expression and to analyse protein translation. Now that fast and cheap sequencing is readily available, scientists are applying it in a number of creative ways. Details of some of those efforts emerged at a conference on Network Biology this week at the Broad Institute, in Cambridge, MA.

The role of selenium in diabetes has been controversial, with some studies suggesting that it raises diabetes risk and others finding that it is protective. Now, research published in BioMed Central’s open access journal Nutrition and Metabolism, has shown that, for men, high plasma selenium concentrations are associated with a lower occurrence of dysglycemia.
