Toronto-based open source site aims to reinvent online journalism
OpenFile, a Toronto based news site, is attempting to reinvent the online news industry through open source citizen journalism, PBS reports . According to OpenFile’s website , the group’s aim is to create a “vibrant, ever-evolving local news conversation among newsmakers, news-gatherers and news readers.” Launched on May 11, the Web site is led by former CBC, CTV and CNN journalist Wilf Dinnick, and has received startup funding from a private venture capitalist

Quarterback Mike Reilly was released by the Seahawks Tuesday two weeks after Seattle claimed the former Central Washington quarterback off waivers from St. Louis. Reilly was replaced on the roster by wide receiver Marcus Maxwell

The theme that emerged from the first session of the Press Gazette Local Heroes conference was the importance of engaging with your community as much as possible in order to be successful in the hyperlocal news arena, and the necessity to go as local as possible.

India: Hindustan Times launches free iPhone app
The Indian English language daily, Hindustan Times , has just launched an iPhone news app, and claims to be the first Indian newspaper to do so, reported afaqs ! While the number of iPhone users in India does not represent a substantial number, the application “will primarily target iPhone users or non-resident Indians in the West.” The app will be offered for free and without advertisements, but HT does hope it will be able to embed ads on the news app, monetizing the application in the future.

Four journalists who have been banned from covering Military Commissions in Guantanamo Bay for publishing the name of an interrogator are appealing the Pentagon order on grounds that their ban was “illegal and unconstitutional,” reports McClatchyDC .

Houston Texans receiver Andre Johnson skipped the first day of the team’s voluntary offseason workouts, unhappy with a contract that was renegotiated three years ago. That contract — which has five years remaining on it — is scheduled to pay him $5.8 million this season. Deion Branch is scheduled to earn $5.47 million this upcoming season

Lebedev discusses with The Guardian his present and future plans
The elections that took place last week in the UK recently created some conflict between media mogul Robert Murdoch and Alexander Lebedev , the Russian billionaire who purchased the Independent along with two other UK newspapers earlier this year. Luke Harding , writing for The Guardian , recently interviewed Lebedev about the apparent spat.

Sunday Times confirms staff cuts and plans for iPhone app
The Sunday Times editor, John Witherow , told his staff at a meeting last Thursday that print-based business is unlikely to be viable in the future. Witherow said the future of news is “digital” and announced the launch of a Sunday Times iPhone app soon, according to Guardian .

The Times expected to cut up to 50 jobs
Guardian reports that in preparation for its June paywall, the Times , will be reducing its editorial budget by 10% and implementing a number of voluntary redundancies that could leave up to 50 journalists out of work. In a lunchtime meeting at the Times last week, editor James Harding revealed that sister publication, the Sunday Times , would also be cutting its editorial budget by 10%, which could lead to the elimination of 30 jobs.

50,000+ people have registered for IPEX – Have you?
IPEX 2010 will be in full swing from May 18th to 25th in Birmingham UK – but the trucks have already been rolling in for weeks. Over 50,000 people already registered for the week long event and IPEX has expanded the show floor to accomodate additional exhibitors.
