Need For Speed Most Wanted (PS2 review) (previously posted on 18October2006)
Take the old Need For Speed games that featured exotic cars that everyone wanted to drive and the fact that you have to race through some peaceful american countryside while cops are on your tale, then blend it in with some Need For Speed Underground city landscape and options to tune out your vehicle and you have Need For Speed Most Wanted. Along with that, you have to create a great rap sheet that has a police record to make you become the most wanted person in the game. You compete with other drivers for the “Most Wanted” title and have to go through a ranking system to become the number one driver

The Next Wave of LBS is Curating People
What next for Foursquare (Gowalla and other companies in the check-in space)? One week into Facebook Places, it’s pretty clear the core use case of finding out where you’re friends have been tilted heavily toward Facebook. Media feedback on whether Places is really innovative varies but that’s besides the point. Incumbent players, with their large audiences, have the luxury of entering new spaces with as “fast followers” who add rapidly adopted features like check-ins to their platforms. But there’s a lot more that can be done in the geo-social area. I’ve always thought that Foursquare’s biggest asset is surfacing leaders in the “things to do” space. Who are the trendsetters that can help me get more out my activities and social life? We value the ratings and reviews of thoughtful contributors on Yelp and Amazon. They save us time and share “hidden” information. Likewise, social trendsetters who have similar interests and preferences to our own can be really informative. Because it’s a use case that transcends friends, there need to be ways to identify these leaders. Here’s where Foursquare’s badging is a really differentiated asset. Badging tied to activity types, categories and interest areas can reveal who’s worth following based on similarity to preferences and “activity graph”. There’s utility and entertainment value in discovering new and interesting places via trendsetters. Want the scoop on the late night hang out scene in your town? Are you checking-in to tourist destinations on your vacation and open to itinerary ideas and tips? Are you a foodie who want to stay abreast of the new “must have” restaurants. There are people who are really engaged into these scenes who can lead the way. You might call them tribal leaders. Tribal leaders crave followers or tribe members. Foursquare is a great platform for these leaders to organize their tribes. I’d like to see profile pages on Foursquare begin to surface these potential leaders in a more meaningful way than is provided today. Badging is a really hugely valuable set of data that can be mined for insight into ‘mayorship’ of a different kind. The version 1.0 of mayorship that is prevalent today really needs to evolve into mayorship which signals deeper qualification to lead specific communities of interest.

French children stay off the screen long enough to read a newspaper
Even though newspapers sell only about half as many copies in France as in Britain or Germany and young people buy papers particularly infrequently, Play Bac has succeeded in creating demand for a range of newspapers created specifically for children . Petit Quotidien (6-9 years), Mon Quotidien (10-14 years), and L’Actu (14 years and up up) have combined circulation of 165,000. Is there any magic to this

Tod Leiweke leaving Seahawks, Blazers to return to the NHL
• Tod Leiweke will be going to Florida later this week, but will return and will remain in place until his successor is chosen. That process, Leiweke said, will take “months not weeks.” • The question of finding Leiweke’s successor starts with a question of what position that successor will fill. When Leiweke came to Seattle in 2003, he was hired as the CEO of a football team

Fighting the Good Fight: Say “No” to Postal Rate Increase
By now you’ve heard all about the pending rate increase. If the Postal Regulatory Commission allows this rate case to happen (which by the way is over 10 times the amount allowed by law), I predict you will see a major slide in mail volume and a major slide in the economy.

A year ago, the Ann Arbor News stopped printing and AnnArbor.com took over. Ann Arbor, Michigan was the first American city to lose its only local daily , and at the time it was anticipated that it would be the first of many. A year later this does not seem to have been the case.

Google’s response to the FTC’s Discussion Draft on the future of journalism
In a twenty page document responding to the Federal Trade Commision’s Discussion Draft on policy recommendations for journalism, Google presents a valiant defence of its support for newspapers and the fact that “the Internet, rather than being the cause of journalism’s downfall, provides a unique opportunity for news organizations to renew and reinvigorate journalism.” Google’s first point is that “the current challenges faced by the news industry are business problems, not legal problems, and can only be addressed effectively with business solutions,” rather than by government regulation on copyright, antitrust etc. Solutions must be driven by the industry itself, the document says.

Covey’s Mantra: Begin with the End in Mind
“ Begin with the end in mind ”, a missive popularized by self-improvement guru Stephen Covey, is based on the principle that all things are created twice. There’s a mental or first creation, and a physical or second creation. The idea that our direct marketing is re-created over and over as it is produced certainly applies to variable data marketing.
