When you are planning to buy a printer you really have two major choices: laser or inkjet.  Knowing the major differences between the two can help you to determine which type of printer is best for you. The basis of how laser printers work is actually static electricity.  Toner powder sticks to the electrical pattern drawn on by the laser and is heated by a fuser so it sticks to the paper.  Laser printers have a lot more parts to replace than an inkjet printer , but if speed and precision are priorities for you then a laser printer may be the way to go.  Lasers allow laser jet printers to print much faster than inkjet printers and the precision comes from the fact that the laser beam never changes in size.  Though laser printers are often more expensive than inkjet printers, that cost difference is often made up in the cost savings that laser printers provide.  Toner cartridges lasts a long time and are relatively inexpensive for the amount of copies they make while inkjet cartridges may need to be replaced more frequently and are comparatively more expensive
