Spooky lightpainting Photo: Jannepaint Gizmodo , “Lightpainting Goes Spooky For Halloween.” Check out this wonderfully scary photograph from Flickr user Jannepaint (right) using the technique of lightpainting: “long-exposure photography where the subject uses a source of light such as an LED, a sparkler or glowstick, and trails it around themselves.” How does he do that? Pocket-lint , “50 Great Geek Pumpkins.” A great (pumpkin) gallery filled with photos of the ubiquitous orange squash, carved into techie themes of varying degrees of terrifying-ness: the Twitter fail whale… the Death Star from Star Wars… and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer's face (eek!).

For regular TFTS readers, it should be old news that Microsoft has some extreme restrictions on Windows Phone 7 , from the hardware to the app development. There had been some backlash that Microsoft was not allowing third-party apps to run while the phone’s lock screen was, ahem, locked.

Kinect is coming this week, as I’m sure you’re aware, and the “killer app” is said to be Dance Central. Next week, on November 2nd, the Supreme Court is set to begin oral hearings for Schwarzenegger v. EMA , a case that, if successful, will make it illegal to sell “ultraviolent video games” to minors. I’m not sure which is the greater credit to Microsoft: that Windows 7 is the fastest-selling OS of all time, or that the rock-solid XP is still going strong after ten years. Despite numerous warnings and, of course, a great OS update to, a lot of system admins are choosing to stick with the old workhorse for as long as they can, even after it’s no longer supported. Hey, if it ain’t broke, right?
