Here’s a small portion of the fun and unusual things you’ll find at Maker Faire Detroit . A Different Kind of Hybrid If I said that there was guy who built a hybrid windmobile coming to Maker Faire Detroit, you’d have every reason to expect that he’d designed a futuristic car. You’d be right, except that the vehicle was built four decades ago and appeared on the cover of Popular Science in 1976.
New Blu-ray Player Ratings: More features at lower prices, even 3D
Sony's BDP-S470, at $200, is the lowest-priced 3D Blu-ray player in our Ratings. Photo: Sony We’ve just posted our latest Blu-ray Player Ratings (available to subscribers), and for those in the market for a new model, there’s some good news: Prices continue to fall, even on models with the latest features, including 3D capability. While the first 3D players cost $350 to $400, well above the average price for a standard Blu-ray model, the lowest-priced 3D player in our current Ratings–a Sony that can be upgraded to full 3D capability via a free firmware update–costs just $200.
YouTube user magx1′s CO2 laser looks like it’s taking over his living room… “Look Mom; I Lased my Breath” … Seriously, though – by exhaling into my ‘supply’ balloon, I was able to get pretty good results considering! Unlike a ‘proper’ laser mix of CO2, N2, and He; the ‘breath’ trick appears to have a much narrower pressure range over which lasing will occur.

AnnArbor.com one year on: does it present an effective alternative to a daily print edition?
A year ago, the Ann Arbor News stopped printing and AnnArbor.com took over. Ann Arbor, Michigan was the first American city to lose its only local daily , and at the time it was anticipated that it would be the first of many. A year later this does not seem to have been the case.
Eighteen to 24-year-olds want news fast, do not necessarily trust brands or corporations and view life as a game, according to BVA , a research institute in France, which carried out a 3-month study of ‘Digital Natives’ , the young peoplewhose lives are shaped by video games, computers, mobile phones and virtual systems.
It is a known fact that purchasing power varies from one individual to another. If we take, for instance, the financial status of a full-time grad student working within a scholarship budget, that may mean having to squeeze all expenses to fit a $1200 monthly allowance. Extra cash may come from waiting tables or other such part-time jobs
My significant other was recently given one of these Woodbaby shoulder puppets by a friend of hers who frequents renaissance faires, where the Woodbaby is apparently a popular commodity. The puppet features a strong magnet in its base that mates with a curved metal plate that goes under your clothing and keeps the figure firmly perched on your shoulder. The mechanical control cable (which, per this thread discussing a DIY version , is an R/C airplane control surface push-rod) runs to a simple controller that can be concealed in a pocket and manipulated to make the figure look around in a surprisingly life-like manner.

Google’s response to the FTC’s Discussion Draft on the future of journalism
In a twenty page document responding to the Federal Trade Commision’s Discussion Draft on policy recommendations for journalism, Google presents a valiant defence of its support for newspapers and the fact that “the Internet, rather than being the cause of journalism’s downfall, provides a unique opportunity for news organizations to renew and reinvigorate journalism.” Google’s first point is that “the current challenges faced by the news industry are business problems, not legal problems, and can only be addressed effectively with business solutions,” rather than by government regulation on copyright, antitrust etc. Solutions must be driven by the industry itself, the document says.
