The Astoria Scum River Bridge

This is an awesome story! It’s art, activism, smart, a great use of the psychology of embarrassment, and most importantly, success! Congratulations to Jason Eppink and Posterchild! Astoria Scum River Bridge For more than twenty years, a leaky pipe on 33rd Street beneath the Hell Gate Bridge viaduct approach submerged more than a hundred square feet of heavily-trafficked sidewalk under a festering cesspool of standing water. Astoria Scum River, as it was called, stretched the entire width of the sidewalk, and as winter approached, the river iced over and became particularly hazardous to cross.

Cognitive behavioural treatment may work for low-back pain

Low-back pain is a common and costly problem. This study estimated the effectiveness of a group cognitive behavioural intervention in addition to best practice advice in people with low-back pain in primary care. Over 1 year, the cognitive behavioural intervention had a sustained effect on troublesome subacute and chronic low-back pain at a low cost to the health-care provider.

Alcohol consumption and raised body mass index (BMI) act together to increase risk of liver disease

Drinkers of 15 or more units per week in any BMI category and obese drinkers had raised relative rates for all definitions of liver disease, compared with underweight/normal weight non-drinkers. The relative excess risk due to interaction between BMI and alcohol consumption was 5.58. Raised BMI and alcohol consumption are both related to liver disease, with evidence of a supra-additive interaction between the two.

Managed Print Services: Paving the Way for a Leaner, Greener Fleet

Doc believes strongly that most people or most companies will only adopt a new technology or service if it makes straightforward economic sense. Research has shown that less than 20% will pay a premium because something is better for the environment or has other positive social outcome. But that doesn’t mean it’s not nice when something that makes economic sense also happens to be more socially responsible

How Can I Eliminate Blots From My Inkjet Prints?

PrinTip: Ink Is Designed to Dry on Paper, But That’s Not Always What Happens Ink in ballpoint pens and inkjet printer cartridges share a common trait — they’re designed to dry quickly. Fast-drying ink works well when the ink dries on paper, but not so well if the ink dries on the printhead that dispenses it

Sony Digital eReader Touch Edition

The Paperless Orifice A Glimpse of Things to Come There was a time in this country, and it wasn’t that long ago, when paper was considered just too precious for some of the—er— hygienic purposes to which it is now routinely put. It was one thing for Pa to wipe his waste disposal port with a scrap of last year’s Sears & Roebuck catalog, but to do so with a pristine piece of otherwise unused tissue paper

18% tax on pizza and soda can decrease U.S. adults’ weight by 5 pounds (2 kg) per year

From Reuters : With two-thirds of Americans either overweight or obese, policymakers are increasingly looking at taxing as a way to address obesity on a population level. “Sadly, we are currently subsidizing the wrong things including the product of corn, which makes the corn syrup in sweetened beverages so inexpensive.” Instead, the agricultural subsidies should be used to make healthful foods such as locally grown vegetables, fruits and whole grains less expensive.

Cisco & Tandberg Adopt TIP Standard = Good News for Telepresence

Tandberg gave me a heads-up a few weeks ago that they would be making some major announcements regarding Cisco and third-party telepresence interoperability as well as an announcement of a new FEC (Forward Error Correction) protocol called ClearPath, which would improve video quality even at high packet loss. An interesting back story behind the Cisco acquisition of Tandberg is that Cisco had to make sure Cisco’s open source and free TIP ( Telepresence Interoperability Protocol ) protocol was used. The EU wouldn’t approve the acquisition of Tandberg without Cisco agreeing to use this protocol
