Automatic coop door opener

The latest issue of MAKE, Volume 22, contains an automated chicken coop door opener project, by Alan Graham (Portland, OR). My geek BFF, Jeri Ellsworth, sent me a link to another, clever remote-controlled coop opener, put together by her friend “Slinky.” It uses a $5 power drill as the door winch and a Seeduino as the controller.

ITP spring show at NYU

Don’t miss NYU’s ITP spring show 2010 : ITP’s graduating students will be presenting a wide variety of highly creative and interactive projects that they have constructed over the course of their final project seminars. ITP is a two-year graduate program located in the Tisch School of the Arts whose mission is to explore the imaginative use of communications technologies — how they might augment, improve, and bring delight and art into people’s lives. Perhaps the best way to describe us is as a Center for the Recently Possible.

Make: Time & Space: More workshop organization ideas

I just love checking out other people’s workshops for those little flashes of inspiration. Make: Online reader Kaas of Ashland, WI wrote in with some excellent tactics for storing hardware. First, she uses chocolate milk containers to store screws and then tapes an example onto the outside of each one so she know’s what’s inside — no labels necessary

Honda’s answer to Segway looks a lot like Serge

OK, so, Gareth may not like it, but this video of Honda’s prototype U3-X omni-wheeled personal vehicle my brother just sent me is rather more persuasive than the shaky hand-cam footage of nervous American riders Gar posted back in 2009. Although I agree the butt-pads are kind of creepy

The 5-minute circuit board agitator, or, making temporary tools

I don’t etch circuit boards very often, so I can’t really justify purchasing or even storing much specialized equipment for it. Once in a while, though, I do need to produce a batch of boards, and having something as simple as an automatic agitator for the etchant tank can make the job much easier

Mintybuck USB charger is like a supercharged Mintyboost

Dave Clausen of NYC Resistor wanted a powerful battery pack to recharge his energy-hungry iPhone 3GS and myriad ham radio equipment, so he designed the Mintybuck to handle the job with ease. Rather than using AA batteries and a boost converter to raise the output voltage to 5v, he swapped in a 12v lithium cell and a LM2674-5.0 -based buck converter to efficiently drop the voltage down to 5v.

Collapsible fabric Yagi antenna

One of my favorite ham radio activities is making contacts on satellites. It’s really fun to know that you’re controlling something that’s receiving and sending communications from space. But communicating with satellites means carrying a big Yagi antenna around.

It’s Alt.Transportation month!

May is here, spring’s in full swing, and folks are in happy circulation. From my home office window, it’s a steady stream of people on leisurely walks, kids and adults on bikes, kids on skates n’ skateboards, and the old guy down the street who proudly rides his Segway to the 7-Eleven. With gas prices and the economy being what they are, growing concern over environmental impacts, and a greater public harangue over obesity and health issues, I’ve definitely seen an increase in neighborhood biking in the past few years.
