LED Throwies – "Invented at Thinkgeek" ?

I received the new ThinkGeek catalog today, I really like them and their stuff – they’re one of the best geek culture curator shops online, as well as developing their own merchandise. That said – I was surprised to see ThinkGeek claiming they invented LED throwies (check out the image above) it’s from the catalog, page 22. It’s on the lower right hand side of the photo above, the little monkey light bulb thing that says “Invented at ThinkGeek”

Doug Repetto’s Walking Tables workshop at MoMA, this Friday!

This sounds like so much fun, I’m tempted to drive up to NYC for the day to attend. As part of MoMA’a amazing Bauhaus exhibitions, events, and workshops, Douglas Repetto (Dorkbot founder, artist, and teacher at Columbia) will be doing a workshop, called “Walking Tables and Wrestling Foals: A Hands-on Workshop and Musical Performance.” Here’s the description from MoMA: In conjunction with the exhibition Bauhaus 1919-1933: Workshops for Modernity (November 8, 2009-January 25, 2010), Bauhaus Lab is a new interactive space that reimagines the historic Bauhaus classrooms in which students and teachers of many forms of art experimented with innovative pedagogical approaches

Multicolor PCB experiment

Though it’s understandably not a high priority for most electronics manufacturers, the aesthetic quality of a circuit board can be pretty important to those of us hacker/maker/experimenter types who often end up using electronics sans enclosure. Seeed Studio pushes the envelope a bit with their multi-solder-mask Rainbowduino – Nobody knows what it will be like, we chose to try from color blocks. The RGB three colors are casted upon corresponding pins of our new Rainbowduino, adjoin to each other.

Black Friday: A Merry Start to the Holiday Season!

Black Friday has come and gone, and after a lot of speculation, here we are, witnesses to its aftermath. And despite America’s worries of unemployment and a financial slump, it still looks like the holidays of 2009 will still be merry. Shoppers were still quick to gobble up deals and were perfectly willing to stand waiting in line way before they care to be up most mornings; after months of wheeling and dealing and tightening their purse strings, America has decided to loosen up a bit

Rainbow Trapped for First Time, Using Convex Lens and Glass [Optical Computing]

Rainbow Trapped for First Time, Using Convex Lens and Glass [Optical Computing] Baltimore citizens aren’t just dealing drugs and installing wiretaps, some of them are busy using convex lenses to trap rainbows, which could be put to good use with optical computing —making hardware faster! Stronger! More powerful! And pretty on the inside. University professors coated one side of a 4.5 millimetre diameter lens with a 30 nanometre thick coat of gold film, which they then put on a sheet of glass also splashed with a helping of gold. After shining a laser beam at the space between the curved lens and the glass, a rainbow appeared trapped between the elements when looked down on with a microscope.

How a HS Dropout Became the Youngest Boss at Apple [Books]

How a HS Dropout Became the Youngest Boss at Apple [Books] James Bach , a legend in the software-testing field, just published Secrets of a Buccaneer-Scholar , the tale of how he dropped out of school, became a self-taught games programmer, and scored a sweet gig at Apple—all before turning 21. The book’s main purpose, as illustrated by the excerpt James has kindly permitted us to publish, is to show how education is not about pieces of paper on the walls, but the knowledge you cram inside your own head. His book is a discussion of his mindframe as he embarked on a life of self-education, as he became what he calls a “buccaneer-scholar.” Here, in a riveting passage, he manages to swing a gig at the hottest company in the Valley, circa 1987: In May of 1987, nearing my twenty-first birthday, I was down to my last hundred dollars, and the only marketable skill I had was for [programming video games,] something I could no longer force myself to do
