Staples was cheated out of more than a hundred thousand dollars, and the men who initially pulled it off are now paying the price. A man from Loveland, Ohio was found by a federal jury to be guilty of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. The conviction was actually the result of the participation of the accused – Paul Shumbayaonda – in a scam that enabled him to purchase cameras, printers and computers from Staples for next to nothing, thanks to a friend who worked as a customer service representative at a Staples call center.

Intel’s High-End Larrabee Graphics Card Won’t Be Released Anytime Soon [Intel] Intel just told us that its first Larrabee graphics card isn’t ever coming out “as standalone discrete product,” because they’re behind where they’d hoped to be in development, meaning you won’t be shoving one inside of your PC anytime soon. And you have to figure that’s pretty far behind, since the Larrabee launch timeframe was 2009/2010.

Spotted over @ Matrixsynth , is this unusually fleshy-looking fingerboard synth known as the Imesco polifónico. Not much info aside from what the demo vids show us and some incidental descrips translated from YouTube- this is the same instrument that was introduced some time ago, now a little over, also lack enough practice since the video was done in haste, […] with a little practice you can play continuously, alternating between the surface and color sector Fairly certain I saw one of these used by a lounge act in Existenz .

It’s the holiday season, and if you’re stuck in an airport, this is a great opportunity to have some ham radio fun! You can listen to air traffic of flights as they take off and land. I find this amusing because it’s like listening to a live airport reality TV show that you’re a part of. You learn a lot about how the coordination of flights.

A group effort from the minds and hands of Alvaro Cassinelli, Daito Manabe, Kuribara Yusaku & Ishikawa Masatoshi – scoreLight (we covered an earlier demo prior) can be seen above fascinating visitor’s to Tokyo’s Miraikan science museum – “scoreLight” is a prototype musical instrument capable of generating sound in real time from the lines of doodles as well as from the contours of three-dimensional objects nearby (hands, dancer’s silhouette, architectural details, etc). There is no camera nor projector: a laser spot explores the shape as a pick-up head would search for sound over the surface of a vinyl record – with the significant difference that the groove is generated by the contours of the drawing itself. The light beam follows these countours in the very same way a blind person uses a white cane to stick to a guidance route on the street.

Thankfully, like with most things on Yanko Design, this individual baby confinement torture-device is just a concept, but it’s also a scary insight into someone’s mind. That someone being designer Pouyan Mokhtarani, whose baby buggy contains a LED screen so you can gurgle and babble away at your baby from a distance, lest you pick up diseases from it, and the air purification unit ensures your baby breathes nothing but the cleanest oxygen

Google Ending Unlimited Free Access To Subscription News [Google] The days of bypassing subscription fees on Google News appear to be numbered now that Google has updated their First Click Free program. Publishers can now limit access to five articles per day before readers are routed to payment pages. Previously, publishers had to make a choice between making their content less discoverable on Google or allowing unlimited access to subscription content via Google News.

Optical Sensor-Laden Skin Gives Robots a Softer Touch [Robots] As robots become more involved in delicate tasks such as autopsies or surgeries, we need their touch to be as precise and sensitive as possible. To have that, we’ll need to give them a skin-like surface full of optical sensors . Existing sensors, which are essentially pressure switches, don’t detect subtle changes in pressure or texture, which translated into an extreme scenario could mean you’d get your bones pulverized by a robot hand

Twitter Co-Founder Begins Trial On SquareUp iPhone Credit Card Payment Service [IPhone] Basic details about Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey’s plans for an iPhone credit card payment service have been floating around for some time, but it appears that his SquareUp startup has finally gone live for trial users—and it looks promising. There are several apps on the iPhone designed to accept credit card payments but, as far as I can tell, SquareUp has the best set of features.
