How a HS Dropout Became the Youngest Boss at Apple [Books]
How a HS Dropout Became the Youngest Boss at Apple [Books] James Bach , a legend in the software-testing field, just published Secrets of a Buccaneer-Scholar , the tale of how he dropped out of school, became a self-taught games programmer, and scored a sweet gig at Apple—all before turning 21. The book’s main purpose, as illustrated by the excerpt James has kindly permitted us to publish, is to show how education is not about pieces of paper on the walls, but the knowledge you cram inside your own head. His book is a discussion of his mindframe as he embarked on a life of self-education, as he became what he calls a “buccaneer-scholar.” Here, in a riveting passage, he manages to swing a gig at the hottest company in the Valley, circa 1987: In May of 1987, nearing my twenty-first birthday, I was down to my last hundred dollars, and the only marketable skill I had was for [programming video games,] something I could no longer force myself to do

Your Wii Is Not Fancy Enough For This Horgan Becket Media Cart [Furniture] Traditional media cabinets may work well enough in the sense that it holds your TV on top and your TiVos and HTPCs and game consoles on the bottom, but do they emit the air of luxury that Horgan Becket ’s does? HB’s Media Cart is hand-crafted to your specifications, so don’t be deterred by the fact that the sample shots only seem to have enough space for a TV, a TiVo and either a subwoofer or an HTPC

How To Make Any Pair Of Gloves Work With a Touchscreen [DIY]
How To Make Any Pair Of Gloves Work With a Touchscreen [DIY] There are commercial gloves designed to work with touchscreens , but you can achieve the same functionality with your current pair of gloves using a needle and some conductive thread. The iPhone screen is capacative, meaning that it requires your finger to complete a circuit in order to work. So, by sewing some conductive thread in small patches on the fingers of your gloves (a circle of about 1/4″ or 6mm in diameter is recommended) and larger patches on the inside area of the fingertip, you should be able to use your touchscreen with an acceptable degree of accuracy

The World’s Largest Earthquake-Safe Building [Architecture]
The World’s Largest Earthquake-Safe Building [Architecture] The new terminal at Istanbul’s Sabiha Gökçen Airport is the world’s largest earthquake-safe building. You’re looking at the over two million square feet of scaffolding that support it, all resting on top of giant geological roller skates. Instead of being built on top of the soil, the whole structure rests on over 300 isolators

Cop Tasers and Arrests a 10-Year Old Girl For Throwing a Fit [Crime]
Cop Tasers and Arrests a 10-Year Old Girl For Throwing a Fit [Crime] Are idiot cops with tasers in some sort of competition with one another? I think the new record for stupidity belongs to Dustin Bradshaw, the Arkansas police officer who zapped and arrested a 10-year old girl for throwing a fit. Get this: the mother called police because her child was throwing a fit about showering before going to bed.

Zepto Computers files for bankruptcy
Zepto Computers files for bankruptcy Zepto Computers may not have exactly made a huge name for itself during its relatively short existence, but it did stand out from the pack somewhat with some high-end , unusually understated gaming laptops (amongst other things ). That apparently wasn’t enough to keep the Danish company afloat in the tumultuous computer business, however, as it has now announced that it’s filed for bankruptcy after not being able to secure some much needed financing

3D mapping drone fires lasers from a mile away (video)
The MIT Technology Review has unearthed a new laser-based 3D mapping robot that can produce results similar to those obtained from $100,000 systems at about a fifth of the cost. Funded by the US Army, researchers at the Stevens Institute of Technology have now demonstrated the Remotely Operated and Autonomous Mapping System (ROAMS, for short), which employs a mirror-based LIDAR system that bounces a laser off a rapidly rotating mirror and gleans environmental information from how long it takes for each pulse to bounce back
