SPINmaster, a DIY staggered hard disk spin-up manager
Spotted in the MAKE Flickr pool : Bryan Levin was apparently having problems with cheap computer power supplies that couldn’t handle turning all of his drives on at the same time. Rather than just buy a beefier power supply, he decided to build this SPINmaster device to turn them on one at a time. He’s got a few more photos of the project on his Flickr page

If you’re in DC this Thursday, Feb 4th, please stop by HacDC and catch this month’s Dorkbot DC gathering. We have two amazing presenters this month, Andy Holtin and Atau Tanka. Dancing automaton powered by falling sand
Although the “look” of this dancing-girl automaton by English toymaker Ron Fuller is not personally to my taste, I could not resist the fact that it is powered by a stream of falling sand, which is a trick I’ve never seen before. Pyxis OS, an operating system for Arduino
Thom wrote in to share his impressive open source operating system*, Pyxis OS . Based around the Arduino hardware platform, it adds some pretty impressive features, such as the ability to run programs from an SD card, read/write to a FAT filesystem, and easily display graphics and GUI elements on a color LCD. It looks like it could be lots of fun to play with, and if you want to peer under the hood, a great way to learn how to build complex systems on tiny microcontrollers.

The Apple-Amazon Ebook War Begins: Amazon Deletes Macmillan Books [Apple]
The Apple-Amazon Ebook War Begins: Amazon Deletes Macmillan Books [Apple] Books published by Macmillan mysteriously poofed from Amazon yesterday. The reason, according to the NYT , is that Amazon is punishing the publisher for arguing that the price of Kindle books should go up to $15.

Teen Accused of Spreading Child Porn
Remember when my maturing self ranted about sexting ? Well, a 14-year-old was recently arrested for allegedly spreading a nude picture of his ex (of the same age) to other students in his school. According to police, the picture has now spread among “dozens of students in at least three different schools.” Again, when did young people start thinking that sending naked photos of yourself to someone else was cool

MacArthur fellow and MIT Media Lab alumnus Karl Sims brings us this great tutorial on how to build your own complex harmonograph ( Wikipedia ) for making cool…um…”geometric figures?” I’m looking for a 50-cent mathematician’s word (which may or may not exist) for these periodic spirally figures. Can anybody help me out?

How to Unlock the HTC HD2’s hidden RAM
Lots of phones nowadays come out of the box with some features disabled, and it’s a simple matter of a little tweaking to activate them. Still, why would anyone intentionally limit the amount of RAM—that piece of hardware that makes high-end phones faster and thus easier to use—available to its users? Case in point: the HTC HD2 , which has 576 MB of RAM built-in, but only 448 MB of that available by default
