Plaster Brings Software Improvements to Powerline
Outside of speed increases, you wouldn’t think there’s much that could make HomePlug networking–using the existing powerlines in the walls of your home to connect nodes–any better. Plaster Networks debuted this year and plans to change that. It’s devices, based on the HomePlugAV spec for 200 Mbps performance, aren’t visually exciting nor priced that aggressively ($149.95 for two adapters, $96.95 for one)

Review and giveaway: SteelSeries Siberia v2 surround-sound headset
The Short Version: The Siberia v2 is SteelSeries’ entry into the virtual-surround headset market, and it holds its own against the excellent Logitech G35s and Razer’s Megalodon headset — at least, in sound quality. However, it doesn’t offer much to distinguish itself, and some minor but troublesome issues may have you springing for the Siberia’s competitors. Plus: I’m giving these away! A lucky reader will be wearing these in a week or so.

Zero Punctuation on Demon’s Souls: it’s too hard!
This week, Yahtzee takes on the game that is, to me, the best reason to buy a PS3 right now: Demon’s Souls .This innovative title was hailed widely by critics as a return to the old-school “you die now” style of gaming many of us grew up with, but it doesn’t sit quite right with Yahtzee. Of course, he doesn’t mention the controls, graphics, depth, or anything other than the fact that it’s groin-punchingly hard, so you can bet he thought all that was great and just didn’t want to say so.

FTC accuses Intel of ‘strengthening its monopoly,” slaps it with a lawsuit
Looks like Intel is in a bit of Dutch. The Federal Trade Commission sued the company for using its position in the market “to stifle competition and strengthen its monopoly.” Not good, no. This may seem strange in the wake of the $1.25 billion settlement between Intel and AMD, the Barcelona to Intel’s Real Madrid.

Assassin’s Creed II DLC priced and dated: Now you can finish the game
Like with every game not called World of Warcraft , I played Assassin’s Creed II for a solid two or three hours, and it’s been collecting dust ever since then. This is relevant because, what, Ubisoft sold me (and all of you!) an incomplete game? Apparently! The game’s upcoming DLC, Sequence 12: Battle of Forli and Sequence 13: Bonfire of the Vanities , which go on sale in January and February, “complete” the game.

One potential indicator for sentiment on business IT spending is the global semiconductor equipment market, which is set for a fall in 2009. WiGig Alliance Finalizes Spec, Tri-Band Wi-Fi in 2010?
The WiGig Alliance said Thursday that it has completed its first specification, paving the way for tri-band Wi-Fi routers as early as 2010. Thanks to improvements in developing the specification, WiGig speeds are predicted to be higher than originally expected, from 6 Gbits/s to closer to 7 Gbits/s, executives said. That’s ten times faster than 802.11n.

The new functionality isn’t automatically apparent, but you can add the Twitter option to your Jing toolbar pretty easily. Wal-Mart starts video game price war, cuts prices of games by $10
It’s so, so easy to hate on Wal-Mart, what with destroying this country’s mom and pop culture, importing cheap junk from China, and freaking out whenever employees mention the word “union.” But if you’re a gamer, you really ought to cast aside your prejudices, brave the crowds , and find the games you’ve always wanted for a good $10 less than what you’ll find elsewhere.

Breathe easy, friends – Pantone has finally announced the 2010 color of the year
Geez make us wait FOREVER, Pantone! You have no idea how excited I was to see amongst the near-endless list of press releases this morning that PANTONE HAS FINALLY ANNOUNCED THE COLOR OF THE YEAR FOR 2010!!! Without further ado, it’s #15-5519 Turquoise! According to the press release: “Combining the serene qualities of blue and the invigorating aspects of green, Turquoise evokes thoughts of soothing, tropical waters and a languorous, effective escape from the everyday troubles of the world, while at the same time restoring our sense of wellbeing.” On behalf of everyone: I can’t wait! When I’ve got trouble on my mind, when my old lady’s done left me and my dog’s done left me too, I’m gonna pull out my Pantone color swatch and let it all… melt… away.

Seagate finally shows up at the solid state drive party with an enterprise offering
Seagate, the big huge hard drive company, has just now officially announced its first ever solid state drive. The press release title says “Seagate Introduces Its First Solid State Drive: Pulsar” and above the title it says “December 08, 2009.” To be fair, Seagate CEO Bill Watkins hasn’t been keen on solid state drives , saying a little over a year ago that his company wasn’t really considering the solid state market aside from these enterprise-level drives that have just been announced. So enterprise-class SSDs: great.
