Two Awful Anniversaries Point to the Need for Robust First-Responder Networks
In most cases when terrible things happen, the impact of those events could have been mitigated if certain steps had been taken the last time something similar happened. There is an outcry to use common sense and to make those changes in anticipation

From the former Editor-in-Chief of BMJ : The naïve concept that the “top journals” publish the important stuff and the lesser journals the unimportant is simply false.
How to Start Windows Explorer with Different Options
This is old info but I needed to refer to it after my Windows reinstall so I’ll just put it here for easy reference. Windows Explorer Command-Line Options ———————————— Explorer [/n] [/e] [(,)/root, ] [/select, ] /n Opens a new single-pane window for the default selection. This is usually the root of the drive Windows is installed on.

I just read the greatest commentary. Written by Alex Bogusky, co-chairman at Crispin Porter + Bogusky, a Denver-based advertising and marketing firm, he opened by saying, “Let me start out by saying that I know nothing about media.” Considering that he was writing in Media magazine on the topic of the future of media, it was a bold thing to say. He then went on to say that one of his great sources of pride is a t-shirt he created on which is printed, “I don’t even know what I don’t know.” Click here to read the article
I tried to wind my way through “H&R Block at Home Free Edition” but gave up when it kept asking inappropriate (and unanswerable) questions about my business and hobby. And it kept pissing me off how it would ask questions in a wonky order (IE for the sale of stock, it first asks about the sale on one page, then when I bought the stock, then another detail about about the sale on a third page) I tried Free Tax USA at random off the IRS website and I liked it a lot . I’ll definitely try it again next year.
23andMe’s consumer-based approach to research seems to be working. The California start-up 23andMe sells genome scans directly to consumers, offering analysis of disease risk, ancestry and other genetic factors via its website. People who buy the scan can also opt to do a number of different surveys, on everything from specific disease symptoms to whether or not one sneezes in response to sunlight.
Sequencing is being used to track how the immune system changes over time, to measure gene expression and to analyse protein translation. Now that fast and cheap sequencing is readily available, scientists are applying it in a number of creative ways. Details of some of those efforts emerged at a conference on Network Biology this week at the Broad Institute, in Cambridge, MA.

Truth in Caller ID Act of 2010 Passes House – VoIP Covered Too
The House passed the ” Truth in Caller ID Act of 2010 “, which under the bill, it makes it illegal “to cause any caller ID service to transmit misleading or inaccurate caller ID information, with the intent to defraud and deceive.” According to the bill, “To amend the Communications Act of 1934 to prohibit manipulation of caller identification information, and for other purposes”. That’s funny, I didn’t think they had Caller ID way back in 1934? The bill states, “It shall be unlawful for any person within the United States, in connection with any real time voice communications service, regardless of the technology or network utilized , to cause any caller ID service to transmit misleading or inaccurate caller ID information, with the intent to defraud or deceive.” So as shown in bold, VoIP is covered as well.
Genesis Offers Hands-On Digital Photography Courses for Children and Teens
Will kids who grow up snapping pictures on cell phones and sharing them on Facebook have the same appreciation for the art of photography and well-crafted photographic prints as today’s photography pros who grew up with film cameras and darkroom processing? Maybe not—unless they can learn from photographers who know how to explain the art
Twitter officially launched @Anywhere at the Chirp conference. The program is basically a contextual integration of Twitter within publisher sites. Chloe Sladden , Dir of Media Partnerships at Twitter, described it as a way to shift a page view into a relationship. Users can immediately follow people or learn more about the person seamlessly from a destination site (when that person is mentioned). Dick Costolo, the COO, gave some background on why this makes sense for Twitter.
Rick is back from vacation, and not only did he field test the new 16-35mm VR, but he also made a visit to David Tejada’s “Small Strobes, Big Results” workshop.
In dealing with Disch’s work , there was so much I had to leave out. I finished the article with an even greater respect for Disch’s achievement as well as a sadness that the rawness and brutality of his work perhaps confined him more to the generic ghetto than some of his peers. Certainly the quality and erudition of his writing matched any of his contemporaries
For Digital Cameras, High-Resolution, Higher Prices
Higher-resolution digital cameras are providing more evidence that, at the more sophisticated end of the consumer technology market, demand has now recovered enough to support firmer pricing. I’ve previously commented on some first quarter price strength in higher resolution cameras and key advanced microprocessors (see “ Closer To The State Of The Art, Prices Start To Rise ”). Now, as noted in our latest press release, the digital camera market may be providing confirmation of mark-ups in the loftier precincts of tech, with the PriceSCAN 12 Megapixel Digital Camera Index jumping over five percent last week
Unless Used Correctly, Electronic Health Records Are a Placebo
E-health is a hot topic. Anything having to do with health care is, of course. In addition to having a huge profile because of the recently ended health care reform debate, both the broadband stimulus and the National Broadband Plan identify it as a
So help me God it gets more and more preposterous, it corresponds less and less to what I remember and what I expect as if the force of life were centrifugal and threw one further and further away from one’s purest memories and ambitions; and I can barely recall the old house where I was raised, where in midwinter Parma violets bloomed in a cold frame near the kitchen door, and down the long corridor, past the seven views of Rome–up two steps and down three–one entered the library where all the were in order the lamps were bright, where there was a fire and a dozen bottles of good bourbon locked in a cabinet with a veneer like a tortoise shell whose silver key my father wore on his watch chain. Fiction is art and art is the triumph over chaos (no less) and we can accomplish this only by the most vigilant exercise of choice, but in a world that changes more swiftly than we can perceive there is always the danger that our powers of selection will be mistaken and that the vision we serve will come to nothing. We admire decency and we admire death but even the mountains seem to shift in the space of night and perhaps the exhibitionist at the corner of Chestnut and Elm streets is more significant than the lovely woman with a bar of sunlight in her hair, putting a fresh piece of cuttlebone in the nightingale’s cage.
