Google Launching Bookstore This Summer [Google Gets Into Amazon, iBooks Game With eBook Store, For Android?]
Today at one of the hottest conferences around, the Book Industry Study Group (sarcasm), a Google manager, Chris Palma, announced at a panel that Google was going to begin selling digital books. The panel was dubbed “The book on Google: Is the Future of Publishing In the Cloud?” Google Books has toyed with the idea for a while as it allowed searching for books and provided some open-source books, but now, they’re going directly into selling them. Problem gamblers provoked by ‘near misses’ to gamble more
The brains of problem gamblers react more intensely to “near misses” than casual gamblers, possibly spurring them on to play more, according to new research in the May 5 issue of The Journal of Neuroscience. The researchers found the brain region that responds to rewards by delivering a dose of the chemical dopamine was especially active in these individuals.

“Omni-focus” camera can focus on near and far objects simultaneously
There’s a trick here, I just can’t quite figure it out. Ordinary cameras, for centuries now since the very first experiments in optics, have relied on organizing lenses in sequence to recreate an image.

Party Lines Slideshow: Elias Koteas, Meryl Streep, Viggo Mortensen, and More at Speak Truth to Power
Who knew classic “that guy” Elias Koteas (Casey Jones from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles !) would have so many fun stories about sitting next to athletes on flights? At last night’s reading of Speak Truth to Power: Voices Beyond the Dark , a benefit for Habitat for Humanity that also featured Meryl Streep, Viggo Mortensen, Julianne Moore, Alfred Molina, and Marcia Gay Harden, we got Koteas to spill the beans on his recent in-flight run-in with Reggie Jackson.

Jerry Saltz Takes You Through the Met’s Massive Picasso Show
If you’ve already read Jerry Saltz’s review of the Met’s Picasso show — with its huge trove of the non-cubist works that book-ended the great artist’s career — see the art captured here, on video, as New York ’s critic conducts a tour of the exhibit. And if you haven’t read the review, for shame , watch the video and whet your appetite for Saltz’s explanation of why works that even the museum’s curator finds lacking are, in fact, great

Honda’s answer to Segway looks a lot like Serge
OK, so, Gareth may not like it, but this video of Honda’s prototype U3-X omni-wheeled personal vehicle my brother just sent me is rather more persuasive than the shaky hand-cam footage of nervous American riders Gar posted back in 2009. Although I agree the butt-pads are kind of creepy

Why The Hills’ Opening Credits Are Both Creepy and Cruel
Watching the new opening credits of this last season of The Hills (a new episode premieres tonight) as Natasha Bedingfield wails about feeling the rain on your skin, we’re struck by a new and slightly jarring sight: Juxtaposed with current images of each character (Heidi, Lo, Audrina, and Kristin) is a faux -grainy video clip of each of them from earlier in the show’s four-year run.

Sony offers extended warranties for PS3, PSP
Looks like Sony now offers extended warranties for the PS3 and PSP . It’s not free, of course, but it’s not like the prices outrageous either, with prices ranging from $30 to $60. Not too much to digest here: a one-year PSP warranty is $30, while a two-year warranty is $40

Arduino Nerf sentry gun build: wiring the trigger
I’m building an Arduino-controlled Nerf sentry gun. Rather than build it and present the finished project all at once, I’m going to chronicle the build here on Make: Online. The first step was to add wiring and a two-wire connector to control the trigger circuit.

The 5-minute circuit board agitator, or, making temporary tools
I don’t etch circuit boards very often, so I can’t really justify purchasing or even storing much specialized equipment for it. Once in a while, though, I do need to produce a batch of boards, and having something as simple as an automatic agitator for the etchant tank can make the job much easier
