AMD’s Vision vs Intel Inside
Being around since the dark ages of black and white(monochrome) computer monitors, I know quite a bit about computer hardware. Therefore, AMD’s Vision does not appeal to me. Although, when it comes to people who know little and/or do not care about the hardware, AMD’s Vision makes sense. Many people I talk to only know of

Açaí, a Global "Super Fruit", Is Regular Dinner Meal in Brazil
From the NYTimes : Virtually unknown outside of the Amazon two decades ago, and not exported from Brazil — the major producer — until 2000, açaí berries have become famous around the world, riding the wave of the antioxidant craze and rain-forest chic. Just a few years ago, farmers had trouble getting rid of the açaí that grows

Huw Price on Robert Brandom
By my lights, then, Brandom’s attitude to metaphysics seems excessively irenic. I want to follow Hume, Ramsey, Ryle, Wittgenstein and Blackburn, in dismissing, or at best deflating, large parts of that discipline. Whereas Brandom – though engaged in fundamentally the same positive enquiry, the same pragmatic explanatory project – seems strangely reluctant to engage with the old enemy

Baking Bread this Sunday at Institute for Urban Homesteading
I’ll be teaching a class I’m calling “Quick Bread” this Sunday at the home of the founder of the Institute for Urban Homesteading. It’s not about quickbreads but about making a good, regular loaf of bread as fast as possible. There are all manner of very affordable one-off classes at IUH.

How secure is Flash? Here’s what Adobe won’t tell you
Adobe’s co-founder and co-chairman says concerns about security in Flash Player are “old news.” Adobe even cites a Symantec study as evidence of their security record. But when you read that study, as I did, you get a completely different, and quite alarming story.

Flash Fights Back with “We Love Choice” Ad!
Adobe Systems launched a campaign to answer the criticisms set out by Apple CEO’ Steve Jobs on Adobe’s Flash technology. Jobs took a good bashing on Flash in an open letter explaining why Apple won’t let Flash or Flash-derived applications onto the iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch. He called Flash a “closed system” and “100% proprietary.” He also criticized Flash for battery power depletion, inability to support multitouch interfaces, security risks, and instability.

Energy efficiency, historic preservation not mutually exclusive
Someone said something to me that really stuck in my head all night: “We believe, in fact, that conservation is the biggest reservoir of ‘new’ energy out there.” Or words to this effect.I got to thinking about this because of some videos that have been sitting in my inbox in the past two weeks.

An explanation of the vote for Brian Cushing
I’m not proud of the vote — or more accurately the revote. As a matter of fact, I still feel very conflicted about the fact I voted for Brian Cushing again in the Associated Press’ re-balloting for the Defensive Rookie of the Year even after last week’s disclosure he failed a drug test

3D Effect Continues To Pancake 2D LCD Prices
The roll-out of 3D-capable LCD television continues to pressure prices of older 2D models enough to overwhelm support from any recovery in retail. We’ve previously discussed this effect for 30”-39” LCD sets ( “LCD Prices Fall So Flat They Look Good In 2D ”) as well as 2D Blu-ray players ( “ Blue Light Special On Blu-ray ”); now in a recent press release we’re seeing something very similar for larger models, as captured by the action of the PriceSCAN 46” 1080p LCD Index . That index dropped 2.6% last week, erasing most of a 3.3% rally that occurred three weeks ago as consumer demand showed new signs of life
