One of the new initiative/products Google announced today at Google I/O is WebM, a new open standard for video formats which is based on VP8 and Vorbis. Is it a good thing or a bad thing? Time will tell, but it’s definitely interesting to see Google explore new things in its quest to take over the planet.

Skype today announced the launch of Skype Manager , a web-based management tool that replaces Skype Business Control Panel (BCP). I noticed the GUI has been slightly revamped, but essentially it’s the same admin panel as BCP. It does have a new Dashboard feature and shows your monthly allocations as a graph

(PhysOrg.com) — A new UC Davis Health System study finds that handgun buyers, if they have any prior criminal record, go on to commit felonies and violent misdemeanor crimes at much higher rates than law-abiding gun owners do. Identifying individuals who legally purchased guns and likely still own them after being convicted of subsequent crimes that prohibit gun ownership could be a valuable violence prevention measure, according to the study.

Researchers from the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics at the University of Oxford, Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and National University Health System (NUHS) have identified new genetic variants that increase susceptibility to several infectious diseases including tuberculosis and malaria.

Yo La Tengo is following up last year’s Popular Songs with a remix EP featuring De La Soul, RJD2, and Pete Rock tackling Songs ’ “Here to Fall,” and Rock’s version is now available. It’s really great! Drastically tightening up the original’s loosey-goosey structure, Rock comes out the other side with something heavier, eerier, and more foreboding, but still familiar; it’s the hardest Yo La Tengo has ever sounded. Quick question, though: Are we sure Pete Rock knows who Yo La Tengo is?

I’ve been thinking of writing up a post detailing the different viewing methods for 3D TV/gaming/cinema and their various strengths and weaknesses, but it looks like that won’t really be necessary. Cyberlink has put together a really nice and very detailed guide to pretty much everything the end user needs to know about 3D. If anything, they err on the side of objectivity.
