The current H1N1 swine flu strain has genetic roots in an illness that sickened pigs at the 1918 Cedar Rapids Swine Show in Iowa, report infectious disease experts at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health in the New England Journal of Medicine. Their paper, published online today and slated for the July 16 print issue, describes H1N1′s nearly century-long and often convoluted journey, which may include the accidental resurrection of an extinct strain.

Refunds for Michael Jackson Concerts in London Lead to Accounting Nightmare
Following Michael Jackson’s sudden death last week, 750,000 fans are expecting refunds for their tickets to 50 concerts that were scheduled in London, but owing to extraordinarily complex legal issues, they may be waiting some time. AEG Live, the Los Angeles–based company that operates the O2 Arena where the concerts were to be performed, has claimed that an announcement regarding refunds will come later this week, but questions regarding the extent of their insurance coverage have led to strong doubts as to their ability to survive the payout. Though it seems certain that fans will eventually get their money, it looks increasingly doubtful that AEG or its insurers will come out of this worst case scenario entirely intact

At a panel discussion of the Personal Democracy Forum, author and youth vote activist Mike Conner said that young voter turnout (18-29 year olds) has increased the last three election cycles – marking the first rise in youth voter turnout since the Reagan era.

After what must’ve been a few painful minutes of rehearsal, a few robots built by the Interdisciplinary Centre for Computer Music Research have preformed what we assume to be their first and last paid gig: a rendition of Happy Birthday to celebrate the 100th of the Science Museum in the UK. What’s interesting about these bots — outside of their horrible ear for music and laughable singing voices is the fact that they’ve actually been programmed to communicate and teach each other to sing through the process of singing to each other. A recent discovery was made in the depths of the iPod Touch software, the discovery seemed to imply that the iPod 3.1 could be the next version to be released, to find the original was posted on a forum here if someone was looking through some of the repertoire of the iPod. Whether it is an indication of a possible version of the iPod or something that was blown out of proportion is still see a certain time a reference to a model of the iPhone 2.1 was found, this was proved to be the iPhone 3GS.
