At Monday's HP Big Bang event here, Hewlett-Packard Co. introduced its new scalable printing platform, designed to provide speedier, high-volume printing for everyone from consumers to enterprises with more serious printing needs.

"This technology is the next step in our business transformation-the master key that unlocks new market opportunities and further growth in our printing business," said HP Imaging and Printing Executive Vice President Vyomesh Joshi. HP demonstrated the new technology in two new printers: the HP Photosmart 8250 and the HP Officejet Pro K550. The first printer, which caters to home users, is designed to print large batches of photos at a faster clip.

HP boasts that the printer can print a 4x6 photo in 14 seconds and cost around 24 cents per print. The second, the HP Officejet Pro K550 Color Printer series, offers laserlike print quality and also boasts a fast print speed and low cost for use. "This is the world's fastest desktop color business printer with the lowest cost per page," Joshi said. "It's half the price of a comparable color laser printer, and it's 30 percent lower cost of operation compared to that of a laser printer."

Each printer contains HP's redesigned printer head, which is created as a single unit (instead of several parts welded together), which means better alignment of the ink chamber, nozzles and heating elements, and increased accuracy of ink placement. The design also supports at least 3,900 nozzles on a single printhead.
